Injuries and Pain
To understand how the components of Traditional Chinese Medicine work together to treat pain, it is helpful to understand the physical impact that injuries have on the body.
Injuries can manifest from a variety of causes, ranging from auto accidents to sports injuries. When an injury occurs, a force or trauma acts on the body and disrupts the flow of Qi (vital energy) and blood in the area local to the injury.
Depending on the severity of the injury, this disruption of Qi can extend into other parts of the body, explaining why head and shoulder pain are commonly experienced when neck injuries occur. The blood and Qi begin to stagnate in the area, causing a blockage in the normal flow of Qi in that area, resulting in swelling and pain.
As time passes, there may be bruising, inflammation and stiffness, further signs of stagnation. The greater the severity of the injury, the greater the disruption of Qi and blood. This disruption of Qi and blood results in the physical symptom of pain.
When the normal flow and function is not restored, injuries may become chronic.......like that knee you injured years ago that never really felt right again!
Healing Injuries
There are many factors that impact the healing process of an injury. Age, health, diet and lifestyle are just a few of the variables. Allowing an injury to rest also facilitates healing. These factors, along with many others, effect the duration of the injury and the likelihood that it will heal completely.
Chinese medicine offers many tools to aid in the healing process. Here are the most commonly used.
Acupuncture directly affects the Qi by manipulating needles at certain acupuncture points, resulting in the movement of Qi and relieving the stagnation that is causing the symptom of pain.
Herbs, both internally and topically, help restore flow by moving the Qi and blood. Because herbs have a direct affect on injured tissue, they can speed the healing time of the injury. There are herbs that have been shown to improve bone healing, and others that target the tendons.
Tui Na (medical massage) directly affects the structure to restore flow and function.
Diet will effect the healing time of numerous injuries. Certain foods will speed healing up and others will hinder it. Sometimes a chronic injury may be the result of improper food choices.
