Some Common Disorders
While Traditional Chinese Medicine is helpful for many different disorders as mentioned on my home page, I thought I would address several that have become almost epidemic in our society today.
Weight Control or Obesity
According to Chinese Medicine, fat tissue represents excess dampness lodged in the skin and muscles. There are several ways to eliminate this dampness from the body. The most effective method is to gently increase the body's basal metabolic rate and improve the processing of water and fluids by strengthening specific organ functions in the body. When this is done with acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine, weight loss is a natural by-product and is both safe and more likely to be long term.
The two most commonly used treatment methods for promoting weight loss in Chinese medicine are the internal administration of Chinese herbal medicines and acupuncture-moxibustion. There are Chinese herbs to strengthen all the organs and functions of the body, thereby helping to eliminate excess dampness lodged in the tissues. As your practitioner, I can select the most appropriate formula for your Chinese medical pattern of overweight.
There are also acupuncture and moxibustion techniques to accomplish all these same actions. Acupuncture may consist of needling points on the body or only points on the ear (see Ear Acupuncture). One benefit of ear acupuncture is that tiny pellets can be placed in the ear with a small piece of adhesive tape, then pressed several times per day by the patient. This insures continuous treatment between regularly scheduled office visits. In addition, there is even an ear point to effectively suppress appetite!

Diabetes
Chinese medicine has recognized and treated Diabetes Mellitus as a specific disease for at least 2,500 years. Over those two millennia, Chinese doctors have continually refined their understanding and their treatment of this condition. The good news for sufferers of this condition is that Chinese medicine (including both acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine) can effectively treat this condition and, in some cases, actually cure it.
Research in the People's Republic of China has shown that acupuncture can be effective for eliminating the symptoms of Diabetes and lowering blood sugar in the early stages of this condition. Even more research has shown that Chinese herbal medicine can be effective for the treatment of all stages of this disease and is appropriate for both type 1 and type 2 Diabetes.
Depending on the patient's personal pattern, he or she will receive a combination of Chinese herbs which is specific to them and not just a "one size fits all" generic treatment for Diabetes. Chinese herbal medicine may be prescribed as decoctions or "teas", pills or powdered extracts.
Research suggests that the combination of Chinese and western medicine for this condition is better and more effective than either alone. In addition, Chinese medicine is commonly able to eliminate any side effects of the western medications. Chinese medicine can also treat the complications of Diabetes.
