The economy is down, unemployment is high, and if you’re fortunate enough to have a job you’re probably still STRESSED. We live in a time where stress is synonymous with being alive; even my neighbor’sdog is stressed out. Fortunately, there are ways to combat STRESS, so you can RELAX.
One stress managing activity is the ancient healing art of massage therapy. Massage therapy has been a practice for mental and physical stress relief for centuries. The tradition of massage therapy was born in India and spread throughout Asia, and is today a popular practice in the West as well.
People under stress tend to have over-worked muscles, characterized by soreness and stiffness in the body. This is caused by an accumulation of lactic acid in the muscle and air waste in the body that is a result of being stressed. Massage helps alleviate soreness by improving the circulation of blood and lymphatic fluids. Massage also helps improve muscle tone, which subsequently improves the nerves that connect with the muscles.
Another great way to combat stress is through acupuncture. Acupuncture, although most commonly thought of as a treatment for pain, is actually a treatment for a wide variety of common and uncommon disorders, including stress. The practice of acupuncture is based on the concept of finding a happy medium for balance and harmony in the body by facilitating the flow of life energy. Life energy, also known as chi/Qi, resides in the body and becomes congested with a flow of mental and physical illness. Acupuncture helps restore chi distribution with needles that are inserted into specific points along the energy pathways of the body.
The ancient Chinese therapy of acupuncture is used to treata number of neurological and musculoskeletal disorders that are caused bystress. The World Health Organization released a list of stress relateddisorders that can be successfully treated with the help of acupuncture:
Headaches
Migraines
Paralysis
Lower back pain
Nocturnal enuresis
Sciatica
Frozen shoulder or tennis elbow
Intercostals neuralgia
Neurogenic bladder dysfunction
Trigeminal neuralgia
These are only a few of the stress related symptoms that acupuncture is known to effectively treat. Do yourself a favor and find a way to de-stress. Although stress is inevitable from time to time, acupuncture and massage therapy are great ways to de-stress and get happy!
