Benefits of Mushrooms

Posted by Alex Shpigel on May 10, 2011 at 7:38 PM

Mushrooms have a long history of use in traditional medicine as an ingredient to enhance immunity, increase longevity and some have used it for spiritual enlightenment such as the Reishi mushroom. Because of their tough structure, the mushrooms need to be cooked to unlock their health-giving potential. Scientists are currently investigating several species for potential anticancer, antiviral, and immunity-enhancing properties. The exact mechanism in which they help enhance the immune system is not well understood but they believe the Beta-D-Glucans help increase T cells to help fight affected cells. So next time you see some mushrooms in your salad or on your pizza, just think...I’m taking good medicine. Ok, maybe that’s just rationalizing my pizza but hey..you have to enjoy life.

I'm all about eating things that might help prevent cancer and illness. Go figure, natural foods help ;)

Nice post, Alex.

I just LOVE mushrooms! Stuffed mushrooms, mushrooms in omelettes, spaghetti, sauces, on pizza, etc! A whole cup of mushrooms ranges from only 70-120 calories - so good for filling up on, too!!

I prefer the omelets and pizza myself but any way you get them is great.
